What is an Emotion and what do we do with it?

An emotion is a beautiful thing, it comes to us to bring us information to help us navigate our nervous system, relationships and environment.

There are far too many emotions to even list and there are shades to each of them.

in so many ways we have been taught that there are “good” and “bad” emotions.

Being happy is good, acceptable and what everyone keeps searching for and working towards. Some chase it.

Being angry is bad and often gets you excluded from the room or the group you are with.

Crying in front of people often makes people feel like they have to apologise.

The one thing that we have as humans that is to be truly appreciated and celebrated is the range of emotions that we have.

And none of them are “bad”.

And none of them are “good” either.

Emotions are simply emotions, they are here to give us information and move through us. They have layers and intensities and all they want is to be felt.

That’s all.

So what is an emotion?

The dictionary will tell you that an emotion is

  • a strong feeling deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.

"she was attempting to control her emotions"

  • instinctive or intuitive feeling as distinguished from reasoning or knowledge.

"responses have to be based on historical insight, not simply on emotion"

Emotions do not have to be strong to exist. They exist anyway.

The last thing emotions want is for you to try and control them.

They want to be felt and to keep flowing until they are done.

The best description I have ever seen of an emotion is

E-Motion

Energy in Motion.

When an emotion is seen as energy in motion and honoured for that it can flow and move through your body and you can be free.

As children so many of us were taught to suppress our emotions, especially the ones that have been labelled “bad”.

Have you ever wondered what happens when you suppress and emotion?

Well it certainly doesn’t flow as it wishes to and move through and out of your body.

It gets trapped.

In your body.

And waits for you to let it out.

For as long as it takes.

Have you ever tried to stop yourself from crying as it was too embarrassing to show that kind of emotion, then later on find that you started snapping in anger at nothing in particular. And when you are asked if you are ok you say “Of course”. And if you have the awareness to stop and think about or feel into what’s going on you realise that you have no idea why you are angry, so you maybe make something up and make it about someone else?

That is your tears and feeling of sadness trying to make their way through your body, asking to be released, to flow so you can be free. The more you keep suppressing it the more tension builds on your body.

It is well known in the alternative therapies that suppressed emotions will in turn, due to the tension that they create by being suppressed, will then create a physical symptom of some kind. This is where injury and illness begin, tension in the body.

Awareness is key to healing which is why blogs like these are so wonderful on your healing journey.

We are uncomfortable when those around us express their emotions for one reason only.

Because when they express their emotions, it triggers that same emotions within us that has been suppressed for so long, usually from our childhood of being told by so many to not express, and these suppressed emotions try to also move out from your body and express themselves.

But because as children we were shamed or excluded from expressing our emotions, the part of us that split off from our psyche at that time for our need to express not being met (see my blog on trauma response), calls out to us and does not feel safe for you to finally express this emotion.

Thus it becomes a battle going on inside of your from the suppressed emotion asking to be released and the inner child saying it’s not safe to be released.

The struggle is real.

It will take a long time and a lot of education, change and awareness for us to be able to truly accept that emotions are normal and allow them to flow within ourselves and others.

And this is something that I am passionate about and would love to support you to do safely and effectively.
